It’s still Saturday morning, instead spending a day to wonder about Connor now, Oliver chose to go for a grocery shopping. Oliver’s fridge started to run out of edible things, except some alcoholic beverages. His mom will come picking him from his apartment for Christmas, if she see this, she sure will be freaked out and give Oliver two paragraphs of gripe.
Cashier started to check his stuffs, while he’s moving each of his goods to the cashier’s counter, his phone vibrated. He sighed, fortunately, there’s only one thing left in his shopping cart, he moved it first, then he took his phone from his jeans’ pocket.
A text from Connor.
Oliver’s eyebrows furrowed, and he gave a sigh for the second time within a minute. He opened it quickly, without expecting too much.
“Can I text you now?”
Oh, yeah that’s right, Oliver mumbled in his mind. He just remembered the time when he’s threatening Connor not to contact him anymore. Oliver smiled while rolling his eyes. He wanted to not reply Connor’s text immediately, making him desperate at last, just like when Connor cancelled their first dinner back then. Wow, that’s very a long, long time ago, Oliver just realized.
The cashier already finished checking Oliver’s things, he’s ready to leave the supermarket. When he was going to exit the supermarket door, his phone vibrated again.
“Connor, fucking, Walsh….” He groaned quietly.
He dropped his grocery on the floor, then he took his phone in hurry, therefore, he almost slipped his phone.
“I REALLY need your help right now, I need to go to your place.”
After Oliver done reading, he stood in silence, looked away while thinking a lot of what will be happened if he answer Connor to come, or the otherwise. He took a deep breath, putting his shopping bag into his elbow’s pit. Then he motioned his hand quickly to tap into his phone.
“Ok, I’ll be home in 10 min.”
The creaking voice of the door gave a prelude as Oliver gazing at Connor in his eyes. Just like the day when Connor made him upset with the canceled dinner, he didn’t let Connor to go inside immediately. Oliver held his door still, in case if Connor forcing himself to go inside, or if he’ll be decided to close the door again. Oliver stared at him from top to the toe, to make him stop showing a guilty puppy face and keep silent.
“I know that this is not the right time, but I need your help… for my work.” Connor rubbed the back of his head, gulping, “And we’ll talk, but I don’t have much time, so we’ll be doing it while you’re working, is it okay for you.”
Oliver shifted his head a little, keeping the silence between them, then he nodded slowly several times. He opened the door wider before Connor sighed in relieve.
“So, what do you need?” Oliver asked while drove Connor into his living room.
“My teacher’s husband just became a suspect of the murder Lila Stangard, I need an evidence to proof he was at the location of the murder when the victim was being killed.” Connor explained, then he was surprised when Oliver turned back to him in shock.
“Your boss sells her own husband out?!”
Connor looked into Oliver’s eyes, which are widened in shock. He licked his lip, feeling the nerves inside. “I know, B—but she needs to be fair, right, even if he’s her husband.”
Oliver shook his head a little while he looking away from Connor. Already had a fucked up feeling. His stepped towards his desk which is placed below his window. He left Connor without leaving any words, Connor himself, he didn’t expect Oliver want to help him in the first place, so he didn’t sure what he was going to do. But then, Connor finally followed Oliver to the desk with his doubt covered his skin.
Usually, Connor would sit as close as possible beside Oliver who helped him with evidence. But now, Connor even didn’t brave enough to talk to him. He decided to sit on the chair next to the desk, facing across Oliver. Connor reached his bag, pulling out a folder to be handed over to Oliver. Inside the folder, Connor collected some case files that can help Oliver. Oliver grabbed the folder, checking each file sheets intensely.
“I can’t hack tolls’ internal system, I’ve tried it, I used to try to do that when I’m in univ—“ Oliver stopped, he just said something that shouldn’t be said.
He glanced at Connor, who is stunned after Oliver said that. He turned his sight again to his laptop screen.
“I’ll try checking this.”
Oliver began typing as fast as he can, his eyes stuck into the laptop screen. Connor, he always looking at him while he was working, making Oliver not comfortable until he looked back to Connor, told him to stop. But now, the one who is uncomfortable is Connor himself, the situation went in silence. Connor started to think that this is the right time for him to fix them, he took a deep breath as he rubbed his own cheek.
“So, do you have something to ask?” Connor began.
“Right.” Oliver replied in a flat tone “Since when?”
Connor looked away from Oliver, finding an answer in his mind. “Since… one year ago.” He paused, sniffing a little “I uh—I got it from my friend, in a party.”
“How many time do you use per day?” Asked Oliver with his throaty voice.
“I—It’s occasional.” Connor gulped, “You know, when I was stressed out or when I need to stay late for work… Last night, I was so tired to study for the upcoming exam, a—and, recently Annalise mad at me because I’m screwing her case… so I took more than usual these days.”
Oliver exhaled deeply, he stopped typing and he stared at Connor. Connor can’t help to not lie much more to convince Oliver to believe.
“I’ll get help after exam, m—my sister would—“
“Why are you lying?” His voice raised, and bring the tense.
Connor’s mouth still hanging open after Oliver cut his words. That question was ambiguous, Oliver might be meant why is he lying about not using drugs, but it’s flinching right into the fact that the last several words he said to Oliver was lies. It’s like the question Oliver asked is trying to make Connor to stop tell him a lie.
“Oliver I…,” Connor finally answered, as he shoved his disheveled hair backside “Because I don’t want you to hate me.”
Oliver still in silent, his hand went back to the keyboard, filling the silent with the sound of keyboard being tapped. Connor shook his head, his mouth motioning, tried to say something.
“Because I like you, Oliver.”
Just for a second, all of Oliver fingers stopped pressing the keyboard’s button again. Oliver bowed down his head, looking at the keyboard. Well, that was the only truth Connor said just now. Connor looked at Oliver deeply, his expression is full of doubt, Connor can just kissed him right away as the silent bothered between them. He meant that words, hereally want Oliver, he really need him. But it’s not going to happen, he hope Oliver at least want to reply his words.
Instead, Oliver started to continue typing, that just making Connor turn away his eyes again.
“So, what are you on right now? Adderall? Heroin? ” Oliver began, sarcastically asking.
Connor turned his head to Oliver, even if he didn’t meet his eyes “I said I would get help after exam.”
“You need to help your boss to prove her husband’s a murderer, So you don’t have a time to worry about yourself right now, I get it.” Oliver muttered.
That’s it, all of the sarcasm from Oliver that can make Connor powerless. Connor was good at sarcasm around his classmate, but not with Oliver. Not when he’s in a condition like this. Connor suddenly had an idea to dig in Oliver’s stuffs, sort of attacking back.
“So, that guy who was here the other night,” He began
“Billy.” Oliver whispered inside his mind.
“The one with the biceps, he wasn’t here last night.” Connor said each word anxiously.
“When you were having your drug induced breakdown? Nope.”
Connor shifted his head away, once again, he regretted for asking Oliver this thing. “And… you don’t get to asking about who I’m dating right now, so…” Oliver resumed, his flat tone never be changed at least once.
“Right.” Connor gave up with this conversation, he wanted to end it immediately, so he jumped to the conclusion, “So, you two are dating, then?”
Oliver moved his head a little, “He got back together with his ex, some underwear model or—“
Then he realized that he just blabbering too much, he stopped, and smile, “Whatever, you don’t get to know any of this.”
Connor gulped, didn’t dare himself to look Oliver into his eyes. Just a second later, there’s a beep came from Oliver’s laptop. Connor leaned closely into Oliver right after Oliver said “Finally, Here we go.”
“According to Speedy Pass, he took I-95 up to New Haven on the 28th, and… returned September 4th.” Oliver explained.
“What about the night of the 29th?” Connor said as his eyebrows frowned, then he looked away to Oliver, expecting for the result he wanted.
Oliver pressed the arrow down button on keyboard until the clacking sound filling the air.
Connor took a deep breath as he getting up from his chair, left Oliver who is still focused on his laptop. Or, maybe he didn’t want to watch Connor being dissapointed for the result. Oliver can feel Connor’s presence at behind him, the step sounded clueless walking around near the couch. Finally Oliver swung his chair over, found out Connor who is looking kind of confused.
“Your coat?” Oliver began.
Then he moved his chair towards the chair Connor sat , Connor reached Oliver quickly. Connor was surely in hurry right now, he even forgot that he put his coat and his bag on the chair he just sat. He took it before Connor can reach it. The coat is ready to handed over to Connor, but then he gazed at each other, for a meaningful several seconds. Connor’s hand thrembled when he took the coat from Oliver’s hand. They hand touched, even if it’s just one inch, It gave a goosebumps for two of them.
Connor shook his head, forcing his brain to not thinking about that touch right now. Then, he took his bag from the chair. He did realize that Oliver watching every movement he made. Also, he did realize that he still had some questions which bothering his mind.
“Oliver I…,” Connor whispered, but audible enough for Oliver “I want to ask you something, may I?”
Oliver rested his chin into his hand, he licked his lower lip. And, this was the thing that made Oliver powerless, he can’t deal with Connor if he’s just gazing at him and take a deep talk, after that Oliver can suddenly forgot how to give Connor some sarcasm just like before. He nodded slowly, as he watch Connor grabbed his coat tightly.
“Why are you saving me? A—and why are you helping me? I know you’re so mad at me.”
Oliver threw his sight away from Connor, “I don’t know… It doesn’t make sense isn’t it?” he gulped, and then he looking back again at Connor, “Why don’t you find the answer by yourself?”
Then he just stepped back a little, right after Oliver questioned his smile, “But you’re unpredictable.”
“That’s how I like you.”
The way Connor bit his lips just drove Oliver insanely wanting to touch Connor lips with his. Oh God, Oliver even didn’t know what things which are make sense or not. Oliver kept watching Connor in his desk chair, he was stepping backwards while wearing his coat. Oliver mouth was open, it’s like it wanted to be kissed, or maybe he was tried to say something, if yes, Connor gave up on waiting for him to respond. He didn’t expect any of that.
“I’m going to Michigan for christmas, I’ll see you after holiday.” Connor smiled again, leaving the living room. “Thanks for your help today.”
Oliver grabbed his hand tightly, he took a breath hardly, and then he got up from his chair, following Connor. He was just going to open the door knob, as he heard a sound of hurry step approaching him, he stopped, and staring at the owner of those steps.
“You can text me, or…,”
